CALL FOR HIGH SCHOOL DESIGNERS!
Want an opportunity to display your very best work at a top professional show?
CAROLINA DESIGNER CRAFTSMEN GUILD INVITES YOU TO CELEBRATE ITS 42nd ANNIVERSARY WITH AN EXHIBIT OF THE VERY BEST IN HIGH SCHOOL DESIGNER CRAFTS DURING OUR ANNUAL THANKSGIVING WEEKEND GALA!
The Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild seeks to promote North Carolina’s high school designer craftsmen. Beginning in 2009 we have sponsored a high school booth at our annual show over Thanksgiving weekend located at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. From both the community and exhibiting craftsmen there has been great enthusiasm and support for the high school exhibit. Through the generosity of our exhibiting members, our scholarship award has grown from $100 the first year of the High School exhibit to $500 in 2010.
All North Carolina High School students are invited to apply for the exhibit. Please share the CDCG website, www.carolinadesignercraftsmen.com , and CDCG High school Exhibit information flyer with every high school instructor and high school student designer craftsmen you know!

This past November at the 41st Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild, a $500 scholarship was awarded to Peace Win, a second year student at Chapel Hill High School. A Burmese refugee who spent time in a refugee camp in Thailand, Win draws as well as doing his award-winning sculpture. The clay mask entered into the high school competition was unique and praised by many of the professional artists showing their work at the show. Peace Win has been in the United States only a brief time, but began taking art classes when he could barely speak English. Teacher Hollie Taylor Novack says he has a natural talent. He made the mask during his classes this year. After designing it and getting it through its first firing, he communicated that he wanted “to bury” it rather than use a glaze. Novack said it took a while to realize that putting it in the soil to “age” it was his intent. The finish is remarkable. Novack hopes that this will be the kind of recognition that Peace Win continues to get as he aspires to go to school to study art. Her goal as an art teacher is to make all of her students “art appreciators”, encouraging creativity each day. The Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild has for two years awarded a scholarship to a high school student whose work represents a maturity in design and craftsmanship beyond their years. The award is funded exclusively by the exhibiting artists belonging to the Guild, who believe the next generation of artists need to be encouraged and supported so the 40+ year legacy of the Guild can remain strong. Teachers are asked to think now about outstanding artwork that can be entered in next year’s competition. |
